Separate stock items when lengths, unit costs or available quantities differ. Finite quantities prevent the optimizer from assuming unlimited standard bars and allow usable remnants to be represented as distinct inventory items.
Include workshop constraints explicitly
- Saw kerf in the same unit as the stock and parts.
- Trim reserved at each end of every used stock bar.
- Stock quantities and costs for standard bars and remnants.
- Part labels and exact demand quantities for checking coverage.
Know what is outside the current model
Machine setup families, angle cuts, defect maps, heat or batch traceability, clamp zones and multi-axis geometry may require preprocessing or additional production controls. Do not encode an unmodelled constraint only in a part label and assume the solver will enforce it.
